The
crisis is back! Ironically enough
the music of this politically and economically
difficult period had a very optimistic tone.
The misery was not or seldomly sung. Nostalgic
songs and romantic ballads helped flee from
the economic malaise of the Great Depression
and the madness of national socialism. Comical
songs fulfilled the enormous need for a carefree
existence; exotic songs allowed for escapism.
Amusement could be found in theatres, dance
halls, nightclubs and cafes as an answer to
the suffocating reality. ‘Thrilling
Thirties’ is Frommermann’s third
program. Following the last successful shows
‘Broken Silence’ and ‘Holland-America
Line’, Frommermann shines again with
music from the Comedian Harmonists and American,
French and Dutch songs from the thirties.
Spanish charmers, Hawaiian beauties and
Dutch blondes all pass the revue.
