After their very successful debut program
with music of the Comedian Harmonists,
Frommermann remains faithful to the
music of the thirties and forties from
the last century.
Frommermann’s new program Holland
America Line (HAL) presents American
and Dutch evergreens originally performed
by groups such as Johnny en Jones, The
Ink Spots, The Mills Brothers, The Ramblers
and Duke Ellington in new arrangements
by leading Dutch composers.
Holland-America Line is a theatrical
concert in which the journey from Rotterdam
to New York is experienced musically
in the choice of repertoire and visually
by the film that was produced by Frommermann
together with director Michael Helmerhorst.
Farewell, departure, memories, expectation,
hope, new chances, arrival. All these
sentiments expressed in traditional
Dutch song, bluegrass, gospel, jazz
and evergreens. Especially for this
tour Frommermann is joined by guitarist
Paul van Utrecht.

The
crisis is back! Ironically enough
the music of this politically and economically
difficult period had a very optimistic tone.
The misery was not or seldomly sung. Nostalgic
songs and romantic ballads helped flee from
the economic malaise of the Great Depression
and the madness of national socialism. Comical
songs fulfilled the enormous need for a carefree
existence; exotic songs allowed for escapism.
Amusement could be found in theatres, dance
halls, nightclubs and cafes as an answer to
the suffocating reality. ‘Thrilling
Thirties’ is Frommermann’s third
program. Following the last successful shows
‘Broken Silence’ and ‘Holland-America
Line’, Frommermann shines again with
music from the Comedian Harmonists and American,
French and Dutch songs from the thirties.
Spanish charmers, Hawaiian beauties and
Dutch blondes all pass the revue.
